The role of social media in context of suicide is an emerging area of interest. Professionals have attributed the rise in young women taking their lives linked to the impacts of modern life; the digital culture that pervades society.

A range of recent studies have linked the platform of social media to mental ill-health. In particular, research indicates that young women experience a range of challenges within their relationship with the digital world. For example, challenges surrounding body image and the striving for physical perfection.

The link between gender, suicide and social media is clearly a complex one. Talking with a trained professional (in confidence) is just one way in which the complexity of thoughts, feelings and behaviours may be explored.
